The Amaryllis family of plants are great to grow indoors as they do not need direct sunlight. They are easy
and bright, and look great as decorations, especially around the winter holidays. The red
color looks especially festive when paired with Christmas decorations.

Watering and Sun
You’ll want to keep your amaryllis amigo in a place that doesn’t see much sunlight. It will still need
some sun, but it doesn’t have to be direct light. This makes it very versatile, and you can put
it in almost any room that has windows.
When to Water Amaryllis Plant
Water the plant regularly. However, be wary of overwatering. If the pot that your amaryllis is
in doesn’t have a drainage hole, you’ll need to be extra careful. Plants that are overwatered
can develop root rot, which is hard to come back from.
Underwatering plants is less of a problem. As long as you make sure that you catch
underwatering early enough, you can just adjust the amount of water so that you water
them a little more or a little more often than you usually would.
Growing Amaryllis Plants
If you have purchased an already grown amaryllis amigo plant, it will be very easy to take care of.
All you need to do is make sure that it gets the proper amount of sun and lighting.
When the flowers on the amaryllis start dying or fading, you can cut them off. This promotes
new growth on other flowers by removing a small part of the plant that was taking up
energy. If an entire branch of flowers is fading, just cut off the whole branch. Other flowers
will grow back, and cutting some flowers off one part won’t hurt the plant at all.

Growing From Bulbs
If you are growing amaryllis amigo from a bulb, make sure that you give it plenty of space in a
planter or pot. Buy potting soil for the planter or pot. Potting soil is designed to drain
properly for a pot.
Plant the pointed end of the bulb facing up. Plant them so that one third of the bulb is
poking out of the dirt. They will need more light while they are growing, and less water.
Keep them in strong (but indirect) sunlight, and don’t give them too much water until they
are about two inches tall.
Growing plants from bulbs can be a really fun experience. You get to watch it through every growth stage. Amaryllis plants are generally very easy to grow from bulbs. If you care for
them correctly, they will grow quickly. This can also be a fun activity to do if you have
children in the house. Let them help you plant and water the amaryllis.

If you have a grown amaryllis amigo plant, but you notice that it is fading at the end of the season,
there’s a simple way to save it so you can grow it again the next year. All you have to do is
trim the plant down to about an inch tall (measured above the bulb).
Keep watering the plant through August. It will probably still have some new leaf growth.
After August, stop watering and let the pot dry out. Then store the bulb in a cool, dark, dry
place until about a month and a half to two months before you want to grow it again. Then,
repeat the steps from the above section for growing a bulb.
If you don’t have shelf or table space to put your amaryllis, consider getting a plant stand
instead. This will lift your amaryllis up so that it is visible, but it will not take up any extra
space where you could put other decorations.
